ABOUT SPARTAN SHOPS, INC., A CAMPUS BENEFIT ORGANIZATION

Spartan Shops, Inc. ("Spartan Shops" "Shops" or "SSI") is a self-supporting, non-profit commercial auxiliary (a Campus Benefit organization) aligned with San Jose State University. As directed by the Spartan Shops Board of Directors and overseen by the Vice President of the University’s Division of Administration and Finance, Spartan Shops provides commercial services at the University for the campus community and affiliated organizations. Spartan Shops does not receive general funds from San Jose State University for its operation and management of projects.

Spartan Shops has proudly served the campus community since long before its formal incorporation on June 15, 1956.

The Shops Board of Directors is comprised of four students, three faculty, three University administrators and a member of the community. The Board is responsible for setting policies. After all financial obligations have been satisfied, the Board authorizes the distribution of any net income to the University community.

Spartan Shops is currently a $29MM+ operation and employs approximately 85 regular benefited employees. Spartan Shops also employs approximately 450 student and part-time casual temporary employees.

SPARTAN SHOPS’ VISION Spartan Shops’ vision is to make Shops the commercial auxiliary model for the entire California State University system through continuous professional growth, the refinement of current services, and the innovation and execution of new services designed to further the SJSU mission.

SPARTAN SHOPS’ MISSION Spartan Shops’ mission is to enrich the lives of the campus community by efficiently providing quality retail and commercial services, while re-investing for the long term benefit of the University. Spartan Shops is committed to learn from the past, execute in the present, and plan for the future.
